How to List your Equipment
Creating a clear and accurate listing helps hirers find the right equipment, understand what is included and know what is expected before making a booking. The more complete your listing is, the easier it is for hirers to confidently book your equipment through Local Hire Marketplace.
1. Choose Your Equipment Category
Select the category that best matches the equipment you are listing.
Choosing the correct category helps your equipment:
- Appear in the right search results
- Reach hirers looking for that type of equipment
- Be easier to find when browsing
- Improve search and filtering
- Reduce confusion for hirers
Choose the category based on the equipment's main purpose.
2. Choose Your Equipment Sub-Category
Select the most relevant sub-category for your equipment.
Where applicable, more than one sub-category can be selected if the equipment reasonably fits within multiple uses or equipment types.
Selecting relevant sub-categories can help your listing appear in more appropriate searches, but only select categories that genuinely relate to the equipment.
3. Equipment Title
Create a simple, descriptive title that immediately tells hirers what equipment you are offering.
Where possible, include important details such as:
- Equipment type
- Model
- Size
- Capacity
- Key feature
Example:
Makita 255mm Sliding Compound Mitre Saw
Avoid vague titles such as Power Tool for Hire or Great Saw.
4. Equipment Brand
Select or enter the correct manufacturer or brand of your equipment.
Providing the brand can help hirers identify the equipment and may help them research specifications, operating instructions or compatibility before making a booking.
5. Security Deposit
If required set an appropriate Security Deposit for the equipment. Security deposits that may discourage bookings.
The security deposit should reflect factors such as:
- Equipment value
- Replacement cost
- Type of equipment
- Risk of loss or damage
- Accessories supplied with the equipment
The security deposit should not be treated as additional hire income. It is intended to provide additional protection during the hire.
6. Equipment Powered By
Select how the equipment is powered.
Depending on the equipment, this may include options such as:
- Battery
- Power Cord
- Petrol
- Diesel
- Manual
Selecting the correct power source helps hirers determine whether the equipment is suitable for where and how they intend to use it.
Where relevant, explain whether batteries, chargers, fuel or other required items are included.
7. Age of Equipment
Provide an accurate indication of the equipment's age.
This helps hirers understand what they are hiring and contributes to a transparent listing.
Equipment does not need to be new to be listed, but it should be:
- No more than 5 years old
- Safe to operate
- Properly maintained
- In suitable working condition
- Accurately represented in the listing and photos
Normal cosmetic wear should be visible or explained where appropriate.
8. Booking Requirements
Use the Booking Requirements section to explain anything the hirer needs to know or provide before collecting or using the equipment.
Examples may include:
- Suitable vehicle required for collection
- Trailer or ute required
- Two people required for lifting
- Appropriate tie-downs required
- PPE requirements
- Relevant licence or qualification where required
- Minimum age requirements where applicable
- Prior operating experience
- Specific pickup or return requirements
Keep requirements reasonable, relevant and clearly explained so hirers know what is expected before booking.
9. Hire Rates
Set competitive hire rates based on the value, type and expected demand for your equipment.
Local Hire Marketplace allows Owners to establish different rates depending on the length of the hire.
Short Term — 1 to 3 Days
Short-term rates apply to hires between 1 and 3 days.
These bookings will generally have the highest daily rate because they provide maximum flexibility for hirers needing equipment for a quick job or weekend project.
Medium Term — 4 to 7 Days
Medium-term rates apply to hires between 4 and 7 days.
Consider providing a lower daily rate than your short-term price to encourage hirers to keep the equipment for longer.
Long Term — 7 to 13 Days
Long-term rates apply to extended hires between 7 and 13 days.
A discounted daily rate can make longer bookings more attractive while providing the Owner with a longer continuous hire period.
Marathon Term — 14 Days or More
Marathon-term rates apply to hires of 14 days or longer.
These bookings may suit renovation projects, construction work, events or other projects where equipment is required for an extended period.
Consider offering your best daily rate for Marathon-term bookings while still allowing for:
- Equipment value
- Wear and tear
- Servicing
- Consumables
- Reduced availability for other hirers
Your pricing should remain commercially reasonable and worthwhile for you as the Owner.
10. Equipment Photos
Quality photos are one of the most important parts of an effective listing.
Use clear, recent photos of the actual equipment being offered for hire.
Where possible, include:
- Front view
- Rear view
- Side views
- Controls or operating area
- Accessories
- Attachments
- Model or identification information
- Any existing cosmetic damage or wear
Take photos in good lighting and keep the background reasonably clear.
Avoid relying solely on manufacturer or stock images, as hirers should be able to see the actual condition of the equipment they will receive.
11. Consumable Usage
Consider whether your equipment uses consumable or replaceable items during normal operation.
Examples may include:
- Saw blades
- Cutting discs
- Grinding discs
- Drill bits
- Sanding sheets
- Fuel
- Gas
- Cleaning chemicals
- Welding consumables
- Batteries or other replaceable items
Clearly explain what consumables are included with the hire and whether the hirer is expected to supply or replace anything they use.
When setting your hire rate, consider the reasonable cost of normal consumable usage and replacement.
This helps prevent disagreements about whether normal consumable use is included in the hire price.
12. Owner's Additional Terms & Conditions
Owners can use this section to include additional conditions that are specific to their equipment or hire arrangement.
Examples may include:
- Equipment must be returned clean
- Equipment must be returned with a full tank of fuel
- Battery equipment must be returned with supplied batteries and chargers
- Equipment must not be used for particular applications
- Maximum operating limits
- Equipment must not be taken off-road
- Equipment must not be sub-hired or provided to another person
- Specific collection or return arrangements
Additional Terms & Conditions should be:
- Clear
- Reasonable
- Relevant to the equipment
- Visible to the hirer before booking
- Consistent with Local Hire Marketplace's platform Terms & Conditions
Do not use additional terms to contradict or override Local Hire Marketplace policies.
