Fair Wear and Tear Policy (Equipment & Tool Hire)
Our fair wear and tear policy explains what is considered normal use and what is not , helping to ensure a fair experience for both hirers and owners.
Fair Wear and Tear
Normal wear and tear is expected when equipment and tools are used correctly for their intended purpose. Hirers will not be charged for reasonable deterioration resulting from ordinary use during the hire period.
Examples of fair wear and tear include:
- Minor scratches, scuffs, or cosmetic marks.
- Expected dulling of blades, drill bits, or cutting edges from normal operation.
- Normal tyre wear from standard use.
- Fading, minor paint chips, or surface rust due to age and use.
- General depreciation and ageing of equipment.
Damage Not Considered Fair Wear and Tear
The following are not considered fair wear and tear and may result in repair, replacement, or cleaning charges
- Broken, bent, cracked, or missing parts
- Tyre punctures, sidewall damage, or wheel damage caused by impact
- Damage caused by misuse, neglect, overloading, or improper operation.
- Water, fire, theft, or malicious damage.
- Equipment used outside the manufacturer's specifications.
- Damage resulting from unauthorised modifications or repairs
- Loss of accessories, attachments, keys, manuals, chargers, or safety equipment
Hirer's Responsibilities
The hirer must:
- Use the equipment safely and only for its intended purpose.
- Return the equipment in substantially the same condition as received, allowing for fair wear and tear.
- Follow all operating instructions and safety guidelines.
- Report any damage, faults, or incidents as soon as practicable
Assessment of Wear and Damage
The owner will assess the condition of the equipment before and after the hire period. Photographs, maintenance records, and inspection reports may be used to determine whether deterioration constitutes fair wear and tear or chargeable damage.
Dispute Resolution
Where a dispute arises regarding wear and tear or damage, both parties are encouraged to provide supporting evidence. The marketplace may review available information and assist in resolving disputes in accordance with its terms and conditions.
